Rachel,

I have to go into work early. Don’t let my mom work you too hard today. Remember, make yourself at home.

Brandon

She tucked the piece of tape behind the note and set it down on the counter with a small smile.

It was still early, so she warmed up a waffle with butter and syrup for Kendra and then took the chicken she had gotten out of the freezer the night before and placed it along with some spices into the slow cooker. She added some potatoes and carrots, setting it on low so that it would be ready for dinner. She glanced at the bowl of apples on the counter and considered getting one for herself but changed her mind.

She thought about walking to the main house, but knew that by the end of the day, she would be tired and glad she had driven. So she loaded everything into her old car and headed that way. It took a few seconds longer for the engine to turn over, something Rachel had noticed a few times in the past. She chose to ignore it for the time being. Having to put money out for a car repair was not something she was willing to think about right now.

Sarah ushered them inside with a smile. Melinda and Benjamin were already there. It took them all about twenty minutes to get everything they needed together and then they drove one of the pickup trucks to the orchard.

As soon as Rachel stepped out of the cab of the truck, the mixture of earth and apples warmed by the sun assaulted her senses. She took a deep breath. Yes, she could get used to working out here.

Benjamin quickly began to show Kendra how he could climb a tree, find apples on the ground, and collect sticks. Melinda joked that he was having fun showing off for a girl, which had Rachel laughing.

With the use of two a-frame ladders and large buckets, the three ladies visited as they picked apples and gently placed them into the buckets. Sarah insisted Melinda stay on the ground at this stage in her pregnancy as opposed to climbing the ladders, and Melinda didn’t argue with her. Even though the buckets weren’t much more than about twenty-two pounds each, Sarah and Rachel carried them when needed. Otherwise, the buckets stayed on the ground near the trees, and the guys would come through and pick them up in the evening.

Rachel enjoyed being at the top of the ladders the best. There was something about being so close to nature that made her feel free. It was almost like she could stay out of the reach of life’s storms if she could remain hidden up there in the trees. She noticed a cardboard box attached to the tree and pointed to it. “What’s that used for?”

Sarah followed the direction of her hand and nodded at the box. “Those are traps for codling moths. They’re one of the main pests we have to worry about with our apples.
